Medicated ear cleaners will disrupt the microbiome in your dog’s ears. They’ll make her more likely to get ear infections in future. Apple Cider Vinegar is a powerful antibacterial agent and can be used undiluted, just as long as your dog does not have any lesions or open wounds in the ears. If your dog does have a few open wounds in the ear, you can dilute the apple cider vinegar with distilled water.
Simply add two organic tea bags or two teaspoons of organic loose leaf green tea to 8 ounces of boiling water. Allow the tea to steep for no more than four minutes and cool. The antioxidants in green tea will help to reduce inflammation and also keep the ears clean.
Types of mites on dogs
Do not think that only the dog suffers from this problem. If not treated properly, mange mites may grow quickly and even affect the owner of the pet by causing some skin diseases. Luckily, you can help your dogs get rid of mange mites effectively with natural ingredients. Unfortunately, some cases of mange are more chronic due to a suppressed or weak immune system.
So if your dog has ear mites, check your cat or ferret too.You may need to treat them as well. But there’s a specific kind of ear mite we’ll cover in this post. It’s called Otodectes cynotis and it’s one of the most common types of ear mites . It’s also a type of mange, also called Otodectic mange. Keep clean your dog’s bed and surrounding whether or not there are symptoms of mange before and after the treatment to reduce the risk of getting mites again. The dog’s ear canal is shaped like an “L” and travels down and then inward toward the center of his head.

Make sure that any drops are at room temperature or slightly warmed before administering. If the drops are too cold or too hot when placed into your dog’s ears, they can cause shock and discomfort as well as make the infection worse. In addition to eradicating adult mites, you need to eliminate the eggs that will hatch and later turn into adult mites. Wash items like pet bedding in hot water and then run them through a hot dryer until they are completely dry. Thoroughly vacuum areas where pets spend a lot of time. Dogs can get ear mites by being around other animals that are infected, especially if they sleep in the same area or bed.
Most dogs find the taste of honey appealing and may try to lick it off. Thus, it would be best for your dog to wear an E-collar during the treatment. Calendula is a herb that has long been used as a topical treatment for various ailments in dogs.
Treat your dog for mites.
Garlic has a broad spectrum of antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties and is widely used to fight a multitude of infections. Garlic contains allicin which will be drawn out from the garlic once it has been crushed. The allicin is the main property in garlic that fights infections. Calendula is an herbal remedy that has anti-fungal properties. You can find calendula tinctures at most natural health food stores.
The same types of mites can affect both dogs and cats, so you need to be especially careful if you have a multi-pet household. If over-the-counter treatments don’t work, see a vet to obtain prescription medication. This may consist of Rx-only ear drops or a topical pest treatment like selamectin. Far more serious than Demodex mites, the Sarcoptes mite is one of the nastiest dog parasites out there. It causes scabies, a painful and unsightly condition that can be deadly if left untreated. Thankfully, many dog mites don’t cause any symptoms at all.
A healthy immune system works to keep invading mites at bay. If you’re worried about a repeat mange infestation, remember to sanitize all areas your dog has wandered. Washing their bedding, or replacing their bed, if possible, is also a good idea. If your dog already has mange, getting a vet’s opinion is the safest route.
Mites and/or fleascan sometimes be the reason your dog has contracted an ear infection. It is ideal to use an herbal flea powder after you have bathed your dog tokill any mites or fleas present. The flea powder should contain pennyroyal powder, eucalyptus, rue, wormwood, and rosemary, and you will need to sprinkle it on the dog’s body at least once per week. Vitamin E or Cod Liver Oil can be useful in healing inner ear and middle ear infections.
Repeating the process every 3 days for 2 weeks will get your dog free from ear mites. Secondary infections can be diagnosed by your veterinarian through microscopic evaluation and treatment instituted. Some cases of ear mites may actually not only be found in the ear canals but also on the haired skin as well. This can create scratching around the base of the ears and also the neck.
Some ear infections are caused due to being directly related to the breed while other types of ear infections can be seen in any dog. Sometimes there’s residual debris in your dog’s ear canal that needs to be flushed. And if there’s also a bacterial or yeast infection, your vet may need to prescribe additional medication or a different medication to address the infection.
Remember, a clean dog is not the place where mites want to hang out. If you're trying to stay natural and avoiding commercial ear cleaners, then I would recommend using mineral oil like this one. Localized mange can be treated with a topical medication that your vet will prescribe you. More widespread mange can be resolved with a bath in shampoo containing benzoyl peroxide.
